If you're like us, you probably consider makeup removal the most tedious step in your skin care routine. There’s just no easy way that works for everyone. Cleansing balms or oils can leave behind a film and aggravate acne, and do-it-all cleansers don’t always remove all traces of makeup and sunscreen. And then there are makeup wipes, which are wasteful and not great for your skin. Micellar water, however, provides the perfect alternative. It’s oil-free, contains zero acne-triggering ingredients, and works just as well as (if not better than) the other options.
Not sure what micellar water is, exactly? Emily Diane Burg, master esthetician and founder of Emme Diane Skincare, breaks it down for us. "Originally developed in France as a way to cleanse the skin without the need for harsh tap water, micellar water is a gentle, water-based solution often marketed as a no-rinse 'cleanser' and makeup remover," she explains. "It’s typically made with purified water, hydrating ingredients like glycerin, and tiny oil molecules, called micelles. These micelles are the star ingredients because they work like magnets to attract and lift away dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin. They have two sides — one that attracts water and one that attracts oil. When you apply micellar water, the oil-attracting side grabs onto dirt, oil, and makeup, while the water-attracting side lifts it all away from the skin." Pretty cool, right?
Micellar water is great at removing makeup and even sunscreen, but it's also an ideal first step in a double-cleansing routine. While some like to use it as their sole cleanser, Burg recommends applying it as a makeup remover and first-step face wash, because it can leave behind a residue. "Think of it as your cleanser’s helper," she says. "It can gently wipe away the surface layer of makeup and impurities, making your regular cleanser’s job easier. This ensures your skin is completely clean and prepped for the rest of your routine to work effectively."
Another incredible thing about micellar water? It's great for pretty much every skin type. The folks who would benefit the most from using it, though, are those with sensitive skin or acne. Micellar water is nonirritating and can be easily swiped across the skin with a cotton pad so it doesn't cause excess friction or tugging. Our favorites are Bioderma's Sensibio H2O Micellar Water, and the brand's Sébium H2O Micellar Water, recommended by master esthetician and ZIIP Beauty founder Melanie Simon.
