Spring has sprung, which means it’s out with the old and in with the new — and that applies to your hair color, too. As the days get warmer and longer, now is the perfect time to try a fresh, new hue. This season, stylists are revamping classic shades of brunette, blonde, and red to create stunning new colors that are unique and modern but still timeless. These shades are familiar, but the subtle nuances of tone, tint, and dimension breathe new life into them. And while these trends are perfect for spring, the colors are so gorgeous, you might just find your new year-round shade.
1. Syrup Blonde
What better way to celebrate the warm sun’s long-awaited arrival than with a golden blonde? This rich, glossy look is one of stylist Tom Smith’s favorite color trends of spring, and it’s easy to see why. A clear departure from the multidimensional trends of years past, “syrup blonde” takes an all-over approach to color to create a timeless, flattering blonde on all skin tones.
“It’s really suitable for many people,” Smith said on YouTube. “The key here is there’s [no] super-high contrast. There’s not really bold dimension or lots of lowlights. It’s a very vanilla-y, creamy tone to the hair with that really intense gold. But it’s absolutely not copper. This is a really lovely, glowy kind of shade of blonde.” It’s a great choice for anyone whose blonde is feeling a bit dull.
2. Copper Apricot
From rich burgundy to golden strawberry blonde and everything in between, red is one of the most versatile and diverse “classic” shades to choose from. Jumping into spring with fresh red hair is a great way to fire up your look for the warmer months, but be warned: These reds and oranges often require more salon maintenance than their blonde and brunette counterparts. (Red fades quickly!)
This spring, stylists are leaning toward a stunning peachy shade nicknamed “copper apricot.” Colorist Charles Ifergan credits Orange Is the New Black actor Natasha Lyonne for sparking this red-orange trend that he describes as “rich red with peachy and orangey terra-cotta tones creating a striking and warm look adaptable to various skin tones.”
As is usually the case with nuanced hair color, it’s best to consult with a professional before selecting your specific shade of apricot. Your stylist will be able to assess your skin’s tone to create the perfect shade of peachy red that emboldens you.
3. Crystal Clear Blonde
Whether you’re looking for a way to seamlessly transition into an all-over gray or want to rock Beyoncé’s go-to color for 2024, Smith recommends what he calls “crystal clear blonde.” Not quite as yellow as platinum blonde but not as cool as silver or pure white, crystal clear blonde is another modern take on a classic.
“This spring hair color trend is great for two specific types of people,” Smith explained on YouTube. “The first set of people that can do crystal clear blonde are those willing to have the maintenance of a global light application. It’s an expensive, time-consuming process, but it looks incredible. Crystal clear blonde is sitting exactly between gold and silver. It’s neutral and creamy, but it’s as light as possible to get the hair to be.”
Smith says this blonde is a fantastic way to transition to an all-over gray as well. When grays are dyed a darker shade and then grow out, the roots appear lighter than the rest of the hair. Depending on the shade of your grays, your roots might actually grow back darker than the crystal clear blonde shade, adding youthful depth and dimension to your hair as it grows out.
4. Mushroom Brunette
Continuing the trend of revamping classic colors is the cool-toned “mushroom brunette.” The soft brown shade features lighter highlights of dark blonde for an overall cool palette that is versatile and flattering without being drab or boring. Colorist Monica Frias of Enchant Hair Company predicts this cool brunette is going to be all the rage this spring.
On TikTok, Frias demonstrated the color application she uses to create this fresh, chic brunette. Her perfect mushroom brown consists of all-over highlights and carefully blended toners that add depth and dimension to the otherwise soft color. She also recommends this color for individuals looking to blend in silver strands without committing to an all-over gray.
Smith likes the taupe trend too, which he calls “The Year of the Brunette.” He loves this cooler shade of brown as the cherry on top of the popular “clean girl” or minimalistic aesthetic. “It’s really great on longer, sleek hair,” he said. “This is not super dark, either. It’s kind of a whisper of brunette. It’s got that muted quality, so it works really well if you quite like to wear a lot of neutral tones in your makeup.”
5. Expensive Brunette
The “expensive brunette” trend has nothing to do with how much money is in your bank account. The multidimensional brunette only looks like it costs a lot and requires you to spend hours in a salon chair, but it’s actually deceivingly low-maintenance.
“There are various shades of the base color that can be used to create different looks,” colorist Noelle Spinosa said, “from deep espresso to warm caramel and rich dark chocolate. These shades add depth, dimension, and richness to the hair, creating a luxurious and high-end appearance. Lifting the base color for dark hair creates purposeful dimension, while toning perfects the shade, achieving versatility.”
Frequent glazes and maybe even keratin treatments are another crucial element of the expensive brunette look. The trend’s intensely glossy appearance is what elevates a simple brunette with blended highlights to an “expensive” look.
