Frizz is a common concern that can (and does) affect nearly everybody with hair at some point, regardless of type or texture. In most cases, frizziness occurs when the hair is damaged. Damage — such as from the hot tools most of us rely on in the winter — causes the hair's outer cuticle to lift, allowing essential moisture to escape. When this happens, your strands may swell in an attempt to absorb moisture from the environment, resulting in poofy, frizzy-looking locks.
Naturally, the best way to fight frizz is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Limiting how often you use hot tools, showering in warm (rather than hot) water, and washing your hair less frequently can all help prevent unnecessary damage, and, in turn, minimize frizz, per dermatologist Jenny Liu, M.D., FAAD. But if your hair is already damaged, you’ll likely need to tweak your routine to keep your strands looking sleek.
