On the ever-present quest to perfect our makeup, another trend has emerged from the trenches of social media that has us wondering, Should we be doing that? The latest makeup hack is called “concealer sandwiching,” and if you’re unfamiliar, you might think it involves taking a break in the middle of applying your makeup to eat a sandwich because learning a new hack can be so time-consuming. But fear not: Concealer sandwiching is actually much easier to master than you think, and according to makeup artists, it’s perfect for anyone who needs a little extra coverage due to hyperpigmentation or acne scars. Here’s everything you need to know about this trend, and how you can try it at home.
What Is Concealer Sandwiching?
According to makeup artist Cassandra McClure, creative director of Clean Living Magazine, “concealer sandwiching is a technique that involves layering concealer between two layers of foundation to achieve a flawless, long-lasting finish.”To achieve this look, first apply a thin layer of foundation, then add concealer to areas needing extra coverage, “such as under the eyes, around the nose, or on blemishes,” McClure says. “Finally, seal it with another layer of foundation to blend everything seamlessly.”
The idea here is that sandwiching the concealer helps “seal it” in place all day, which makes it a great makeup technique for important events, longer days when you can’t touch up your makeup as much, or just when you’re in need of extra coverage.
Who Should Avoid Concealer Sandwiching?
Although this makeup application method “ensures maximum coverage and durability,” according to McClure, certain skin types might want to avoid it. “Those with very dry or flaky skin might want to avoid concealer sandwiching, as layering multiple products can emphasize texture and dryness,” McClure explains. “Additionally, if you prefer a more natural or minimal makeup look, this technique may feel too heavy or time-consuming.” This is not for those no-makeup makeup days.
Keep Concealer Sandwiching From Looking Heavy
Layering makeup products doesn’t mean you can’t achieve a natural, dewy, and hydrated look. It just takes a bit more effort. “To make the most of concealer sandwiching, use a hydrating base [such as a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid], primer, and setting spray to keep your skin looking fresh and dewy,” McClure says. The Urban Decay All Nighter Extra Dewy Setting Spray is our favorite for this.Choosing your complexion products is also important to keep the look as light as possible. “Choosing the right shades and textures of foundation and concealer is crucial,” McClure says. “Opt for lightweight formulas such as Elate’s Cream Concealer or Alima Pure’s Cream Concealer that blend well together,” she says. “Remember, less is more. Build coverage gradually to avoid a cakey finish.”
