You're not wrong to be confused. Choosing the right footwear to wear with jeans has gotten more complicated as of late, mostly because the popular shape in denim has changed so much. We got used to seeing flats, boots, and sneakers with skinny jeans, and when the trend switched to looser-fit styles, the same shoes just didn't look right. Part of the solution is just adjusting our brains to a different silhouette when wearing straight-leg, bootcut, or wide-leg jeans. But sometimes a little styling tip helps, too.
Of course, you don't have to jump into the loose-fit denim trend — wear whatever jean silhouette you like! But if you're interested in the relaxed fit that's so in style right now, personal stylist Brigitta took to TikTok to share her favorite shoes to wear with wide-leg pants. She loves sleek sneakers that will "make your jeans feel timeless," flat leather slides, a pointy-toe kitten heel for dressier moments, a great pair of loafers, and a mid-heel ankle boot. The latter is also the go-to for creator Julia, who advised looking for boots with a narrower shaft to ensure they'll fit under your pants. Julia also likes almost all flats with her wide-leg pants, though she doesn't enjoy when her pant hem drags on the ground. We have to admit — we like it when baggier denim pools a bit around the ankles. But when it comes to fashion, it's all about personal preference.
One of the biggest tips to keep in mind when styling wide-leg jeans, according to fashion influencer Kristine Fernandez, is to always let your shoes peep out from under the pants. When in doubt, just ensure your pants cover a good amount of your shoes. That's usually easier with an elongated shoe style, such as one that's pointed or round and narrow. There are no rules when it comes to personal style, but chunkier footwear, such as "dad" sneakers, lug-sole boots, and platforms, can look dated. Avoid them and you're good to go.
