For decades, fashion media has circulated the same basic idea: Youth equals beauty. Whether selling skin care or shoes or something in between, our culture has primarily rooted its sales pitches in the premise of looking and feeling younger. On the one hand, increased energy and zest for life are certainly admirable traits to work toward. But on the other hand, why should these qualities be restricted to those under 40? Or 50, or 60?
In short, they aren’t. When it comes to fashion, age really is just a number — something far too frivolous and earthly to hinder a concept as timeless and ethereal as style. Style comes from within, whether we’re 22 or 82, and anything that suggests otherwise is a perpetuation of ageist ideals that are well overdue to be booted from our general zeitgeist.
With that in mind, we’re spotlighting some of our all-time favorite style icons who have already celebrated their 60th birthdays (and then some). These fashion luminaries rock every single decade their age can boast — and look phenomenal while doing it.
Iman
A Somali American model and muse to designer greats including Versace, Calvin Klein, and Yves Saint Laurent, Iman celebrated her 68th birthday on July 25, 2023, and still exudes elegance and style in spades. We particularly love that she’s unafraid to rock bold patterns and colors, especially in the same outfit. She wears her hair long and loose, switches up her makeup between full-on glam and subtly chic, and embodies the look of a confident, self-assured sexagenarian.
Diane Keaton
Diane Keaton discovered long ago what style she feels best in and has stayed true to that ever since. She opts for structured suits, monochromatic color palettes, and a distinctly unapologetic androgynous vibe. We love that she always seems comfortable in her skin, never shying away from her naturally gray locks or well-deserved wrinkles.
Debbie Harry
Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry took the world by storm in the 1980s with her alternative feminine aesthetic, and she’s kept that look through her late 70s. Her distinctive eyeshadow, arched brows, and pouty lips fly in the face of safe, “age-appropriate” makeup, and she’s let her signature platinum blond hair naturally fade into a mature, stunning silver. Her love of graphic design and willingness to wear what she wants regardless of trends are a testament to her rock-star nature.
Tina Knowles-Lawson
Looking at Tina Knowles, it’s easy to see how her two daughters, Beyoncé and Solange, grew up to become style icons themselves. Tina isn’t afraid to experiment with different hairstyles, from caramel and honey bangs to the finger waves that were so popular during the golden age of Hollywood, and she loves monochromatic outfits that accentuate her curves.
Jane Seymour
British actor, writer, and former Bond girl Jane Seymour laughs at the idea of “matronly” clothing with a beaming, 100-watt smile under her signature ginger fringe. Whether wearing a body-hugging, glittery wiggle dress or a flowing, colorful kimono, Jane Seymour remains as vibrant and glamorous as ever well into her 70s. Her innate confidence shines through every ensemble she wears — and there’s no better accessory than that.
Angela Bassett
Angela Bassett, who celebrated her 65th birthday on August 16, 2023, is the epitome of a strong, stylish, and confident Black woman. She steals the show on every red carpet she walks — and makes it look effortless, to boot. From structured suits to couture gowns to tank tops and jeans, it’s hard to find an outfit that she doesn’t absolutely slay in. In fact, we’re unsure such a thing even exists.
