If you compared the number of pairs of shoes you own versus the number you wear on a regular basis, how would the data stack up? If the totals are about the same, we applaud you!! But if you find that you own far more shoes than you wear regularly, we’re here to say, as fellow self-described shoe collectors, you’re not alone.
From rarely worn formal wear to function-specific shoes such as rain boots and trainers, our shoe collections can pile up quickly in our closets and entryways. Paring down the pairs to a manageable collection is easier said than done, but knowing which styles to ditch and which to save can help you get started on the right foot.
Whether you’re looking to shrink your mountains of shoeboxes or you need help shopping for the pairs you’ll wear over and over again, here are five must-have shoe styles to keep on foot, er, hand at any given time.
Versatile Flats in Your Go-To Style
First up on our list of must-have shoe styles is the unsung hero of the footwear world: comfortable flats. Since the style possibilities for flats are virtually endless, it’s best to keep things simple by opting for a style that closely fits your aesthetic. If you’re generally ultra-casual, try a neutral-colored ballet slipper or slip-on sneaker. If you’re more often in something tailored, try an Oxford mule or leather loafers.
A good rule of thumb is to look for a pair of flats you would feel comfortable wearing with at least half of your everyday wardrobe. While eccentric or highly stylized flats can add extra oomph to an outfit, they tend to fall short in the versatility department.
Durable Sandals With a Bit of Personalized Flair
Unless you live somewhere with mild temperatures year-round, your sandals will likely only see the light of day for about half of the year. Instead of wasting money on multiple pairs of strappy sandals you may or may not wear by summer’s end, invest in a sturdy pair of open-toed shoes that are comfortable and reflect your personal style. Birkenstocks, Dr. Scholls, and leather slides are all great places to start.
One other note: Sandals’ strappy designs make them some of the least sturdy shoe styles we willingly put on our feet. Spending a little extra for supportive insoles and sturdy construction increases the longevity (and comfort) of our summer shoes.
Solid, Supportive Sneakers — Sport-Specific or Otherwise
If you spend a lot of time playing sports or being physically active, you likely already know — and own — the best sneakers for you. But even if you don’t consider yourself an athlete, having a solid pair of sneakers on hand is a must for long walks, yard work, or other outdoor activities where sandals and flats might be too flimsy. Again, finding one style that closely fits your go-to look is key.
Neutral color palettes can help bridge the gap between recreation and fashion. Other key factors include insole support and durability. Waterproof finishes are also a great way to ensure you can wear your sneakers in as many places as possible.
Sturdy, Neutral Fashion Boots
Snow and hiking boots have their place in the footwear world, but it’s hard to beat the versatility and classic look of a sturdy, neutral fashion boot. Whether dressed up with a skirt or wide-legged slacks, or styled more casually with your favorite pair of jeans, a comfortable boot in black or brown is an invaluable addition to your wardrobe. To combine chicness and comfort, stick with wide heels no more than 2 inches high.
A solidly constructed pair of water-resistant leather boots can last decades and be worn year-round, making them an extremely worthwhile investment. They might be a little pricier than basic sneakers or flats, but skimping on quality is a recipe for discomfort, deterioration, and spending more money in the long run.
Timeless, Business-Appropriate Heels
There’s a reason certain shoe silhouettes have stood the test of time. A neutral, closed-toe slingback, pump, or kitten-heeled shoe has its place in the boardroom, on date night, and at any other event that requires a bit more dressing up than usual. These timeless styles ensure you’ll get ample wear out of the shoes even if you don’t dress formally (or business casually) often.
Comfort is a crucial factor when deciding on a go-to pair of heels, though. No one wants to hobble around the office or during a night on the town, so be sure to prioritize heels that you feel comfortable walking in.
